
Plumbing Basics for Rainwater Catchment
Learn the basics of connecting gutters and downspouts to water tanks and how to connect multiple water tanks to each other. We will also cover issues of piping and pumping water to where you need it, simple water purification and filtering, freeze protection during winter, sizing water pipes, different piping materials, and common pipe fittings and connections. This workshop is a hands-on workshop installing simple connected water catchment systems. The workshop is led by licensed plumber Harvey Harman, who has 30+ years of rainwater catchement experience in central North Carolina and Africa.

How to Build a Natural Playground
Join Landscape Architect Dan Sundberg and others for a fun afternoon exploration of examples of and hands-on experience with "How to Build a Natural Playground." Looking at ways to create natural play spaces using everyday materials like logs, rocks, sand, trees, stones, wood, and poles, learn simple ways to help set up natural play areas that encourage imagination and creativity. Also learn about simple patterns that children find enjoyable such as hidden or secluded spaces, climbing or jumping options, swinging, hanging, twirling, skills games, materials that can be used for making structures (teepees, hideouts, houses, etc.), and so much more.

How to Cook in an outside, cob oven
Learn the basics of cooking pizza, bread, beans, and other foods in an outside, wood fired cob (or masonry) oven. Taught by people who have cooked in such outside ovens growing up in rural villages or by doing it for many years. Learn how to bring the oven up to appropriate temperature, how to cook and bake common daily food items, and how cooking and baking in a cob oven can also be a community activity. Also learn the common problems to avoid, and best ways to continue learning about this time old way of cooking.

Community Sauerkraut and Kimchi Making Party
Fermenting foods for taste, preservation, digestibility, health benefits, and increased nutritional value has been done in almost every culture throughout the world. Join experienced food fermentors in an afternoon of making sauerkraut and Kim chi. Bring cutting utinsals, cutting boards, vegetables and food items you wish to contribute for a fun afternoon creating traditional fermented sauerkraut and Kim chi. A suggested list of vegetables and food items to bring will be supplied to all those who sign up for this hands-on, free community workshop. All items created to the workshop will be divided and shared with all participants.

How to Organize a Barn Raising/Shelter Raising Project
While the materials may change, the basics of installing any kind of fence are the same. Fencing can serve many purposes from being a decorative accent, to providing a support for climbing plants, to marking a boundary, to providing an enclosure to keep something in, to providing a barrier to keep something out, to creating separated space within a larger space, to allowing for privacy or to delineate private space from more public space. Learn the basics of fence building that are the same for all kinds of fencing (support posts, fencing materials between posts, connectors, bracing corners, etc. Also learn ways to install fencing to keep fence lines straight and accurate, simple tools to assist with fence building, and so much more. Led by Harvey Harman, who is a farmer/builder who has built and maintained many different types of fencing.
